چکیده

In our previous research a linear readability formula was developed through a series of multiple regression analyses using four independent variables: (1) sentence length, (2) word length, (3) textbook-based word difficulty and (4) textbook-based idiom difficulty, and one dependent variable: year level of EFL textbook. The present study attempts to develop a new readability formula that includes the subjective judgment for each sentence of EFL texts by experienced Japanese EFL teachers who are familiar with the EFL textbooks and teaching at middle-grade schools in Japan. A multiple regression analysis was computed, using this factor as a new dependent variable and the previously obtained linear equation as an independent variable. The resultant linear equation was mathematically adjusted in order to provide a more powerful quadratic equation. The computation, which was carried out using Fukui’s College Analysis, a computer program for statistical computation, yielded a quadratic equation formula which proved to be much more powerful in predictive power (r) than the linear equation that had been derived in the previous study.

A Machine Learning Approach to Measurement of Text Readability for EFL Learners Using Various Linguistic Features

The present paper introduces and evaluates a readability measurement method designed for learners of EFL (English as a foreign language). The proposed readability measurement method (a regression model) estimates the text readability based on linguistic features, such as lexical, syntactic and discourse features. Text readability refers to the comprehension rate of a text (0.0-1.0). The experim...

Measuring Readability for Japanese Learners of English

This paper describes the relative effectiveness of seven variables of three categories in predicting the readability of the EFL texts used in the Japanese context. The factors examined in our research were (1) word difficulty and (2) idiom difficulty, in addition to the commonly used variables, sentence length (SL) and word length (WL). In the analysis of word difficulty three measures were con...

Exploring EFL Learners' Beliefs toward Communicative Language Teaching: A Case Study of Iranian EFL Learners

Although Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been widely advocated by a considerable number of applied linguists and English language teachers, its implementation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts has encountered a number of difficulties.  Reviewing the literature suggests that one of the reasons for unsuccessful implementation of CLT may be neglect of learners' beliefs in t...

A Study of Compliments across Cultures: The Effect of Sociolinguistic Transfer on EFL Learners

The purpose of this research was to examine how Korean and Japanese EFL learners’ speech act of compliment is transferred from their native cultures when they are interacting in English, and to investigate if the two cultural groups display different or similar strategies in giving and responding compliment. The subjects were 20 intermediate-level Korean and Japanese university students, who pa...
